Canadian Football League 1966 Season

The year 1966 marked the 9th season of the existence of the Canadian Football League. While this was only the 9th official season of the league, there were 4 years previous that the beginning of the CFL that Canadian football had existed.

The year 1966 brought a few changes to the league. The sport was a work in progress, like all sports, and the rules evolved over time in order to adapt to unforeseen circumstances that arose after the beginning of the league. This year featured a major rule change that would change the way that people could block. Previously there were limits to how much blocking could be done on rushing plays. 1966 brought a rule in which there were no limits on how much blocking could be done on each run play. There was also a change in the goal posts. They were changed to a goose-necked style of post.

The regular season in the CFL featured one Conference that was clearly dominant over the other. The Eastern Football Conference was simply a notch above the Western Football Conference during the regular season.

These two divisions played different amounts of games due to the number of teams in each conference. There were just 4 teams in the Eastern Football Conference. Meanwhile there were 5 teams in the Western Football Conference.

The worst team in the Eastern Conference was the Toronto Argonauts. The Argonauts managed to win just 5 games on the season while dropping 9. This team struggled, but they were the only team that really struggled in the Eastern Conference. The Argonauts were the only team in the Eastern Conference that had a record that was worse than .500.

The Montreal Alouettes were the 3rd place team in the conference and finished with a 7-7 record on the season. This record was good enough for a playoff berth. The Alouettes weren’t quit the caliber of the other teams in the Eastern Conference, but they were still on par with just about all of the other teams in the Western Conference.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats managed to win 9 of their 14 games on the season and had the 2nd best record in the league in 1966. Although they had the 2nd best record in all of the CFL, they were still only able to land a 2nd place finish in the regular season. The top record would go to the Ottawa Rough Riders with 11 wins and 3 losses.

The Western Conference would send the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos to the playoffs after they finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively.

The Ottawa Roughriders managed to push through the playoffs towards the Grey Cup after they had such a stellar season. The Saskatchewan Roughriders also managed to push through to the finals. This means that both “Roughrider” teams would make their way to the Grey Cup. These two teams held the top spot in their respective conference, giving a great championship game. In the end the Saskatchewan team was better than the Ottawa team and they managed to win the Grey Cup Championship.

Nfl Picks Of The Week – Nfl Picks For Week 2 Fantasy League Pickups

Nfl Picks Of The Week

Just when you thought it was safe to spend a day getting ready for the college football picks this weekend, the need for free NFL picks rears its head yet again. This time, it’s the fantasy footballers among us in need of a little guidance after at tumultuous week in the league.

Of all the news that came down on this week, none was bigger for fantasy-tics than Ryan Grant’s season ending ankle injury. For the past three years, Grant has been a fantasy mainstay. As one of the few NFL running backs not having to share significant and playing in a high-powered offense, he had become a late-first round or early-second round pick in just about every league. If he’s still available on the waiver wire – a slim chance at this late hour – Brandon Jackson is your man. While he won’t give you the same value that you likely would have gotten from Grant, Jackson can be a quality 2nd or 3rd fantasy back.

In the event that you missed out on Grant, two different backs may have just gained fantasy value with just one move. The New England Patriots shipped Laurence Maroney to the Denver Broncos for a pair of draft picks. The move means Maroney can probably expect a few more carries in the Mile High, although he will still be solidly behind Knowshon Moreno. It also gives veteran Fred Taylor a slightly tighter grasp on the top job at Foxboro. That status comes with a big asterisk – the Patriots’ depth and running back by committee approach that made Maroney expendable also make Taylor not as solid a pick as he could be. Nfl Picks Of The Week

Running backs weren’t the only ones impacting your free NFL picks. Detroit Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford reportedly suffered a joint sprain in his throwing shoulder. The initial diagnosis says he will miss the next four to eight weeks. However there is concern that after a visit to Dr. James Andrews, Stafford could end up being out a lot longer. Let’s be honest, you’re not picking up Shaun Hill. However, depending on how deep your league is more attractive pickups like Kyle Orton or Jason Campbell could still be available. Temper your enthusiasm on Campbell, but if you’re going to play him, this is the week with Oakland lining up against the Rams.

Finally it appears that Kevin Kolb’s concussion (say that five times fast!) will likely keep him out of the lineup, although the Eagles have yet to make an official determination. Nonetheless, it significantly boosts Michael Vick’s value for the week. Long-term, it would still appear to be Kolb’s job to lose – although the Philly fans were ready to fire him in the second quarter of last week’s loss to Green Bay. Vick sparkled for the Eagles last week and it would appear that as long as Kolb can’t play, Vick’s a good option. Nfl Picks Of The Week

The First Professional Women’s Baseball League

With the majority of young men sent off to fight after America’s entry into World War II, several major league baseball executives needed to find a way to maintain baseball in the public eye.  They decided to start a new professional league with women players.

Founded by chewing gum mogul Philip K. Wrigley in 1943, the league was named the All-American Girls Baseball League.  In 1949 the league was called the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, but by 1951, the league changed to American Girls’ Baseball League.  Initial tryouts were held at Wrigley Field in Chicago, but the league never played regulation baseball.  The game was a hybrid of baseball and softball.  The ball was the size of regulation softball and pitches were thrown underhand in the softball windmill custom of throwing.  The pitcher’s mound was much closer than regulation baseball and softball, but the distance between the bases were longer than in softball and 25 feet shorter than in baseball.  Eventually as each season was played, the ball shrank to regulation baseball size, overhand pitching was allowed, the mound was moved back to 60 feet, and the bases were extended but still five feet shorter than regulation baseball.

The league went on the road for spring training during the 1946-1948 seasons, traveling to Mississippi in 1946, Havana, Cuba in 1947 and to Florida in 1948.  During the 1948 season the AAGPBL attracted 910,000 fans that paid to watch the 10 teams play baseball.  The salaries for the female ballplayers ranged from $ 45-$ 85 a week which in later years rose to as much as $ 125 per week.

The league had strict rules of conduct and restricted the women from having short hair, smoking and drinking in public places, and required them to wear lipstick at all times.  The players would face fines if they did not follow the rules and could be suspended if they committed three offenses.  Each player received a beauty kit with instructions and was required to attend evening charm school classes during spring training.  The classes taught the girls about personal hygiene, mannerisms, proper etiquette, and how to dress.  The uniforms were comprised of a short-sleeved tunic dress with a belt.  The skirts could not be worn more than six inches above the knee and every effort was made to make the women as attractive as possible.

The Rockford Peaches were one of the most successful teams in the AAGPBL with the most championship wins.  Their star players led the team to the league championship in 1945, 1948, 1949, and 1950.  The Peaches played their home games at Beyer Stadium in Rockford, Illinois.  The team’s manager, Bill Allington became the most successful manager in the league’s history.  Under his leadership, the Peaches reached the playoffs six times and won the AAGPBL Championship Title four times.  This team was fictionalized in the 1992 movie A League of Their Own directed by Penny Marshall.

Another notable team was the Milwaukee/Grand Rapids Chicks who won three championship titles.  Managed by former Pittsburgh Pirate star player, Max Carey, the Chicks led the league in runs scored (492), batting average (.207), stolen bases (739), and tied for first in home runs (12).  Their squad consisted of talented players like Josephine Kabick, Merle Keagle, Connie Wisniewski, and Alma Ziegler.

The Racine Belles and the South Bend Blue Sox each won two league championship titles and the Kalamazoo Lassies won the title in 1954, the league’s final season.  Women playing baseball was frowned upon in the fifties and the AAGPBL did not continue in 1955.  Although they made history by being the first recorded professional women’s baseball league, its significance was soon forgotten.  A Players Association was formed in the 1980s enabling many former players from the dissolved league to get together and enjoy reunions.  It remains a unique aspect of American baseball history as a time when over 600 women athletes were given the opportunity to play professional baseball.

The Green Bay Packers Tickets : The Green Bay Packers Have Won Twelve League Championships In Nfl

The Green Bay Packers are an American football team based in Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are members of the North Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL) and are the third-oldest franchise in the NFL.

The Packers are the last vestige of “small town teams” that were once common in the NFL during the 1920s and 1930s. Founded in 1919 by Earl “Curly” Lambeau (hence the name Lambeau Field on which the team plays) and George Whitney Calhoun, the Green Bay Packers can trace their lineage to other semi-professional teams in Green Bay dating back to 1896.

In 1919 and 1920 the Packers competed as a semi-professional football team against clubs from around Wisconsin and the Midwest. They joined the American Professional Football Association (APFA) in 1921, the forerunner to what is known today as the National Football League (NFL). The Packers are the only non-profit, community-owned major league professional sports team in the United States.

The Green Bay Packers have won twelve league championships (more than any other team in the NFL) including nine NFL Championships prior to the Super Bowl era and three Super Bowl victories in 1967 (Super Bowl I), 1968 (Super Bowl II) and 1996 (Super Bowl XXXI). The team has a historic rivalry with the Chicago Bears, whom they have played in over 170 games.

The Packers also share a fierce blood rivalry with the Minnesota Vikings, who also reside in the NFC North along with the Packers, and the Dallas Cowboys who have historically been known as the Packers’ largest playoff rivals after the Packers defeated them in the famous Ice Bowl.

Beginning with the 1992 season, the Packers had 13 non-losing seasons in a row (their worst record being 8/8 in 1999), two Super Bowl appearances, and one Super Bowl win (Super Bowl XXXI). The Packers’ 13 consecutive non losing seasons was an active NFL record until the team finally suffered a losing campaign in 2005. They returned to playoff form with winning campaigns in 2007 (13-3), reaching the NFC Championship game and 2009 (11-5) under current head coach Mike McCarthy.

The Green Bay Packers were founded on August 11, 1919[4] by former high-school football rivals Earl “Curly” Lambeau and George Whitney Calhoun. Lambeau solicited funds for uniforms from his employer, the Indian Packing Company. He was given $ 500 for uniforms and equipment, on the condition that the team be named for its sponsor. Today “Green Bay Packers” is the oldest team-name still in use in the NFL, both by its nickname and by virtue of remaining in its original city.

On August 27, 1921, the Packers were granted a franchise in the new national pro football league that had been formed the previous year. Financial troubles plagued the team and the franchise was forfeited within the year, before Lambeau found new financial backers and regained the franchise the next year. These backers, known as the “Hungry Five”, formed the Green Bay Football Corporation.

After their early seasons at Bellevue Park and Hagemeister Park, the Packers played home games in City Stadium from 1925 to 1956. The team won its first 6 NFL world championships while calling City Stadium its home.

Once the NFL threatened to move the franchise to Milwaukee if stadium conditions were not improved in Green Bay, the city responded by building a modern facility for the Packers, open in time for the 1957 season. The new stadium became the first built exclusively for an NFL team. Lambeau Field was originally known as City Stadium, like its predecessor, but its name was changed in 1965 after the death of Curly Lambeau.

When Lambeau Field opened in 1957, it had a seating capacity of 32,150. The stadium was expanded seven times before the end of the 1990s, and seating capacity reached 60,890. In 2003, Lambeau Field was extensively renovated to expand seating, modernize stadium facilities, and add an atrium area. These renovations raised Lambeau Field’s seating capacity to 72,928.

Despite the multiple expansions of Lambeau Field, ticket demand has far outpaced supply, as all Packers games have been sold out since 1960. Over 78,000 names are on the waiting list for season tickets.

The Packers played part of their home slate in Milwaukee starting in 1933, including two to three home games each year in Milwaukee’s County Stadium from 1953 to 1994. The Packers worked to capture their growing fan base in Milwaukee and the larger crowds. By the 1960s, threat of an American Football League franchise in Milwaukee prompted the Packers to stay, including scheduling a Western Conference Playoff in 1967.

Since County Stadium was primarily a baseball stadium, the field could barely fit a football field, and the end zones extended onto the warning track. By 1994, improvements and seating expansions at Lambeau prompted the Packers to leave County Stadium after 62 years In Milwaukee, and again be based solely in Green Bay.
