The First Professional Women’s Baseball League

With the majority of young men sent off to fight after America’s entry into World War II, several major league baseball executives needed to find a way to maintain baseball in the public eye.  They decided to start a new professional league with women players.

Founded by chewing gum mogul Philip K. Wrigley in 1943, the league was named the All-American Girls Baseball League.  In 1949 the league was called the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League, but by 1951, the league changed to American Girls’ Baseball League.  Initial tryouts were held at Wrigley Field in Chicago, but the league never played regulation baseball.  The game was a hybrid of baseball and softball.  The ball was the size of regulation softball and pitches were thrown underhand in the softball windmill custom of throwing.  The pitcher’s mound was much closer than regulation baseball and softball, but the distance between the bases were longer than in softball and 25 feet shorter than in baseball.  Eventually as each season was played, the ball shrank to regulation baseball size, overhand pitching was allowed, the mound was moved back to 60 feet, and the bases were extended but still five feet shorter than regulation baseball.

The league went on the road for spring training during the 1946-1948 seasons, traveling to Mississippi in 1946, Havana, Cuba in 1947 and to Florida in 1948.  During the 1948 season the AAGPBL attracted 910,000 fans that paid to watch the 10 teams play baseball.  The salaries for the female ballplayers ranged from $ 45-$ 85 a week which in later years rose to as much as $ 125 per week.

The league had strict rules of conduct and restricted the women from having short hair, smoking and drinking in public places, and required them to wear lipstick at all times.  The players would face fines if they did not follow the rules and could be suspended if they committed three offenses.  Each player received a beauty kit with instructions and was required to attend evening charm school classes during spring training.  The classes taught the girls about personal hygiene, mannerisms, proper etiquette, and how to dress.  The uniforms were comprised of a short-sleeved tunic dress with a belt.  The skirts could not be worn more than six inches above the knee and every effort was made to make the women as attractive as possible.

The Rockford Peaches were one of the most successful teams in the AAGPBL with the most championship wins.  Their star players led the team to the league championship in 1945, 1948, 1949, and 1950.  The Peaches played their home games at Beyer Stadium in Rockford, Illinois.  The team’s manager, Bill Allington became the most successful manager in the league’s history.  Under his leadership, the Peaches reached the playoffs six times and won the AAGPBL Championship Title four times.  This team was fictionalized in the 1992 movie A League of Their Own directed by Penny Marshall.

Another notable team was the Milwaukee/Grand Rapids Chicks who won three championship titles.  Managed by former Pittsburgh Pirate star player, Max Carey, the Chicks led the league in runs scored (492), batting average (.207), stolen bases (739), and tied for first in home runs (12).  Their squad consisted of talented players like Josephine Kabick, Merle Keagle, Connie Wisniewski, and Alma Ziegler.

The Racine Belles and the South Bend Blue Sox each won two league championship titles and the Kalamazoo Lassies won the title in 1954, the league’s final season.  Women playing baseball was frowned upon in the fifties and the AAGPBL did not continue in 1955.  Although they made history by being the first recorded professional women’s baseball league, its significance was soon forgotten.  A Players Association was formed in the 1980s enabling many former players from the dissolved league to get together and enjoy reunions.  It remains a unique aspect of American baseball history as a time when over 600 women athletes were given the opportunity to play professional baseball.

Tiger Woods and girlfriend Lindsey Vonn make first red carpet appearance as a couple at 2013 Costume Institute Gala

Tiger Woods was photographed arriving at the 2013 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday night (May 6). The 37-year-old golf player was joined at the event by his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn to rub elbows with the biggest names in Hollywood and fashion. It is the first time Tiger Woods and his lady love have officially walked the red carpet as a couple. Also attending the star-studded event were a host of celebrities such as Miranda Kerr, Emma Watson, Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Gisele Bundchen, Anna Wintour and more. The newly-minted lovebirds were both dressed in Vogue as they attended the Met Ball as guests of the mag, looking more bride and groom. Tiger Woods sported a straightforward black suit with a skinny black tie. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn wore a gorgeous white, sleeveless gown with two see-through slits up each leg. The Olympic skier accessorized with gold statement earrings and tied her blonde hair into an ornate ponytail to complete the whole look for the occasion.

Tiger Woods and his girlfriend Lindsey Vonn, who went public with their romance in March by both releasing statements on Facebook, smiled and posed with their arms around each other on the red carpet at the 2013 Met Gala.

The power pair made an absolutely stunning couple as they walked the red carpet together as a couple for the first time at the fashionable affair.

Lindsey Vonn, who stepped out to support her boyfriend Tiger Woods during the first round of the 2013 Masters Tournament at the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta earlier this month, proudly posed next to the 37-year-old sportsman.

The twosome donned classic evening attire for the event centred on pushing past established boundaries, with Tiger Woods wearing a classic black suit and Lindsey Vonn sporting a flowing floor-length gown with a sheer back.

The Washington Wizards Tickets:the Wizards Get Into The Playoffs For The First Time In Nba History

The Washington Wizards is a professional basketball team based in Washington, D.C., previously known as Washington Bullets. They play in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

The club now known as the Wizards began play as the Chicago Packers in the 1961/62 season. The next season, they changed their name to the Chicago Zephyrs. In 1963 the franchise moved to Baltimore, Maryland, and became the Baltimore Bullets (no relation to the 1940s/50s Bullets franchise). In their first year in Baltimore, the Bullets finished 4th in a 5 team Western Division.

Prior to the 1964/65 NBA season the Bullets pulled off a blockbuster trade, sending Terry Dischinger, Rod Thorn and Don Kojis to the Detroit Pistons for Bailey Howell, Don Ohl, Bob Ferry and Wali Jones. The trade worked out well; Howell proved to be a hustling, fundamentally sound player who helped the Bullets get into the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. In the 1965 NBA Playoffs, the Wizards stunned the St.

Louis Hawks 3/1, and advanced to the Western Conference Finals. In the finals, Baltimore managed to split the first four games with the Los Angeles Lakers before losing the series 4/2.

Flip Saunders reached an agreement to become the new coach of the team in mid-April, 2009.Despite having the second best chance at obtaining the number one overall pick in the 2009 draft, the Wizards were randomly chosen to pick fifth overall in the NBA Draft Lottery.

This pick was later traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves, along with Songaila, Thomas, and Oleksiy Pecherov, in exchange for Randy Foye and Mike Miller. On May 21, 2009, Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld announced that the team has named Randy Wittman and Sam Cassell as assistant coaches. Then on August 11, 2009, the Wizards signed Fabricio Oberto, many weeks after he committed to signing with the team.

On December 24, 2009, it was revealed that Arenas had admitted to storing unloaded firearms in his locker at Verizon Center and had surrendered them to team security. In doing so, Arenas violated both NBA rules against bringing firearms into an arena and D.C. ordinances. On January 1, 2010, it was reported that Arenas and teammate Javaris Crittenton had unloaded guns in the Wizards’ locker room during a Christmas Eve argument regarding gambling debts. The D.C. Metropolitan Police and the U.S. Attorney’s office are investigating.

In January, the NBA suspended Arenas indefinitely without pay while conducting their investigation into the incident. NBA Commissioner David Stern said in a statement that while Arenas would likely face a lengthy suspension (possibly for the remainder of the 2009-10 season, if not longer), “his ongoing conduct has led me to conclude that he is not currently fit to take the court in an NBA game.

“Despite Stern’s longstanding practice of not disciplining players until the legal process plays out, he felt compelled to act when Arenas’s teammates surrounded him during pregame introductions prior to a game with the Philadelphia 76ers and he pantomimed shooting them with guns made from his fingers. The Wizards issued a statement condemning the players’ pregame stunt as “unacceptable.

On February 13, 2010, after a 17/33 record at the season’s midway point, The Wizards traded Butler, Haywood, and Stevenson to the Mavericks in exchange for Josh Howard, Drew Gooden, Quinton Ross and James Singleton. Three days later, the Wizards traded Antawn Jamison to the Cavaliers in exchange for Zydrunas Ilgauskas and obtained Al Thornton from the Los Angeles Clippers in a three-team deal. Ilgauskas reported long enough to take a physical (to make the trade official). His contract was immediately bought out, making him a free agent.

On February 26, 2010, the Wizards signed Shaun Livingston to a ten-day contract.Despite the off-court distractions, the Wizards finished the season with a modest 26/56 record. However, they were the only Southeast Division team not to make the post season.

Most games are carried on TV on Comcast SportsNet which is available in the Washington, D.C. area and other parts of the mid Atlantic states. Alternate local carriers include WDCW-TV and cable station TBD TV. Wizards games are announced by Steve Buckhantz and Phil Chenier. Chris Miller serves as a sideline reporter for some broadcasts (including most Wizards’ home games). On the radio, Wizards games are broadcast on WJFK-106.7 FM, with Dave Johnson and Glenn Consor doing analysis.

Preparing For Your First 300 Game in Bowling

Would you like to know a very simple technique any bowler can use that can help you prepare for your first 300 game? Did you notice I wrote first 300 game? What you are going to learn is something that will help you in league play as well as in tournament play. You are going to learn how to create your own customized “Preshot Success Routine”.

If you ever watch professional athletes, they have discovered a success routine that has worked very well for them and has brought them to the professional ranks. The next time you watch your favorite bowlers on Tour, pay close attention to their Preshot Success Routine. I’m not asking you to copy exactly what they are doing, but to just observe how consistent they are when they use their routine.

Right now I want you to imagine what your present preshot routine is and how well it is working for you. Let’s start with when you are walking up to the approach and picking up your ball. Do you use a towel? Do you put your hand over the blower to remove any sweat? How do you hold onto the ball once you step up onto the approach? Where are your feet positioned? What are you focusing on just before you take your first step?

There are more variables to your routine but at least you have a good idea where to start. Make sure you create your own personal Preshot Success Routine you feel comfortable with and you can use each time no matter if its for a strike or spare. Consistency is the secret to your Preshot Success Routine. You must commit to it no matter how you are feeling.

When I worked with Collegiate Bowlers, we would go into detail what their routine looked like because we were building a solid foundation that was reliable and consistent. Why is it so important to have a Preshot Success Routine? You need this so you don’t have to think about it when you step up to the approach. Your routine must become a habit so you can really focus on your target. Think about when you are driving a car now compared to when you first began learning how to drive. So many things you do now when you drive are just automatic. This is what we are striving for – an automatic routine. A Preshot Success Routine you really don’t have to think about.

Remember this is your own Preshot Success Routine, not anyone elses. Create one that fits you and one that you feel comfortable with using on every shot. Did you know it takes 21 consecutive days to form a new habit? You need to commit to make your Preshot Success Routine a habit. Once you do, then you are on your way to your first of several 300 games. When it comes down to the last three frames, your routine is what can bring you through your first perfect game.

2013 Volkswagen CC 2.0T – First Drive Review

In designing the latest Jetta and the U.S.-market Passat, Volkswagen didn’t take many aesthetic risks. Their innocuous, slab-sided shapes reflect modern, strip-mall Americana as much as they contrast the elegance of the brand’s other U.S.-market sedan, the eminently European CC.

Graceful as it is, the CC has been largely unchanged since its emergence as a 2009 model. For 2013, it adopts new styling cues that bring it in line with its more-modern, Yankee-fied siblings. Fearful that the comparison-test-winning four-door coupe’s other strengths were ironed out in the process, we headed to Half Moon Bay near San Francisco for a closer look.

Approach the 2013 CC and you get a familiar feeling; its new three-bar chrome grille looks plucked straight from the Passat and gives the car a harder, chunkier mug. Bright, bixenon headlights flank the new face and are accented by standard LED daytime running lights on all but base Sport models; the LED DRLs are part of the Sport’s optional adaptive front-lighting system. The hood and front bumper also are tweaked, and the car’s side sills are more sculpted than before. The cool, frameless doors carry over.

The CC’s rear also has been restyled and incorporates standard LED taillights that illuminate in an unmistakable “CC” shape. New 17- and 18-inch aluminum wheel designs unique to the CC complete the visual reinvention.

Volkswagen claims the effort makes the car even more elegant while adding some muscle to its stance. That’s a difficult combination to pull off when the original car’s soft, delicate look was its calling card. It’s still one of the prettiest sedans for the money, but the look has been somewhat commoditized.

The other major change for 2013 is the addition of a center seating position in the back, something that’s been offered as an option on the European model for a couple of years. With the addition of a seatbelt and some raised padding in place of the bin that was there before, it retains the four-seat look but eliminates what VW says was the car’s greatest point of rejection among potential buyers.

Just don’t expect it to be of much use with full-size passengers. The rear footwells are tight, and the sloping, tapered greenhouse severely crimps head- and shoulder room. Occupants quickly will become acquainted with each other. Minor trim changes keep the rest of the cabin fresh, which is good because the CC’s seats and ergonomics were already excellent.

Four- and six-cylinder engines, as well as chassis bits, carry over untouched. The ride is still refined yet sporty, the steering light but tactile and responsive. All the controls are well-placed and have a premium feel to them.

Our wheel time was limited to the 200-hp 2.0T model, which comes with front-wheel drive and a choice of a slick-shifting six-speed manual or the six-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic, depending on the trim level. The 2.0T is wonderfully tractable and makes more than enough power to have fun on an empty mountain road. Compared with pricier, 280-hp VR6 models we’ve driven in the past, the 2.0T feels lighter and more responsive. (The VR6 remains available with front- or 4Motion all-wheel drive for 2013.)

Prices increase slightly over last year, with 2.0T stickers ranging from $ 31,070 to $ 36,175. Base CC Sport models are well-equipped with 17-inch wheels, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, heated and powered front seats, a touch-screen audio system with eight speakers, Bluetooth, iPod connectivity, and leatherette seating.

Stepping up to the 2.0T Sport Plus adds the front LEDs and adaptive front lighting, as well as navigation, the DSG gearbox, and 18-inch wheels. The top-level 2.0T Lux model brings different 18s and interior trim, along with ambient cabin lighting and a sunroof. A sporty R-Line model will reappear later in the year and will feature a more-aggressive steering wheel and exterior highlights, along with unique 18s and a choice of manual or automatic transmissions. Pricing has yet to be released, but it should come in just above the Sport Plus model.

VR6 models start at $ 38,550 for a front-drive Lux and include all of the 2.0T items, as well as heated headlight washers, a rearview camera, navigation with a larger touch screen, leather seating with heated and cooled chairs up front, and “Interlagos” 18-inch wheels. The VR6 4Motion Executive ($ 42,240) adds all-wheel drive, paddle shifters, a massaging driver’s seat, front and rear parking sensors, an upgraded Dynaudio sound system, and a power rear sunshade.

Despite their reserved styling, the new Jetta and Passat have shown to be strong sellers in the U.S. market. Even if the CC’s refresh has diminished its beauty, the sedan remains the most attractive VW of them all. On top of that, it still drives sweetly.

Overall, the LED lights are widely used for automotive lighting, and will come out with even more innovation in the future.
