Baseball Drills – A Conversation With Myself

I haven’t exactly done the proper research to call this a FAQ, but they certainly are questions…that are asked..quite a bit..I think. Okay, it’s time to stop stumbling around an introductory sentence and get to the good stuff. Questions about baseball and baseball drills. This is a conversation I had with myself in my head, if it helps you follow along I asked the questions in my normal, Midwestern United States accent (I’m from Kansas) and answered them in a deep southern accent, a VERY bad southern southern accent.

Q: Is baseball our greatest American pastime?
A: Well, I reckon (sorry, I couldn’t resist) it probably should be. It is certainly our most timeless and precious pastime, but I would probably say that tailgating and NASCAR are our favorite pastimes.

Q: How can I become a better hitter?
A: Drills, Drills, Drills. There is only one way to become a better baseball player and that is to practice. It’s not enough just to practice though, you have to get make sure you get proper instruction and practice the right way. That way you don’t ever have to UNlearn anything.

Q: What are the best baseball drills to do to become a better hitter?
A: There are a ton of different baseball drills you can do to become a better hitter. The best drills are going to be the ones that provide a cure for your particular ailment. If you’re struggling with your step and your load, try soft toss to get the timing within your swing back, if you’re struggling keeping your head down and keeping your eye on the ball, try doing some tracking the ball drills to make sure you track the ball all the way into the catcher’s mitt, and if you want to improve bat speed, try the quick toss drill which is very similar to soft toss but the ball’s come in rapid succession.

Q: So this is all I have to do to become a better hitter?
A: Not exactly, there are a ton of different baseball drills that people use to make themselves a better hitter, and remember, there’s more to the game than just hitting.

Q: I have one more quick question, did you lose your southern accent halfway through our discussion. A: Well, I’ll be, it looks like I did fall out of character *sneeze* oh boy, looks like I’m getting a code. Anyways, get out there and study hitting, become a better student of the game and experiment with different drills and see which baseball drills work best for you. Soccer is a game of individual skills that is then integrated into a team strategy. Coaches have to be the providers of the strategy, but it should be up to each individual player to master his or her skills.

With soccer shooting drills, you could be talking about individual skills or strategy drills. Shooting is the glamour skill of soccer and every player should be an excellent shooter. But there are many elements to shooting that can be broken down into individual skills that must be mastered before moving on to more complex drills.

For instance, the top players can use the many different quadrants of the ball to create many different shots. There are slicing shots, David Beckham benders, Cristiano Ronaldo knuckleballs and many more. Every player has his or her particular strengths and weaknesses. For instance, some players are not planting their non-shooting foot properly and need to drill that.

As a coach you need to ensure that fundamental shooting technique is mastered before moving on to the fancy shots. Kids always want to imitate the fancy shots of their heroes, and they’re all going to want to learn how to make it bend like Beckham as soon as possible. That’s just fine, but you as a coach should be ensuring that they are doing the fundamentals correctly before working on the trick shots.

The simpler soccer shooting drills will be best for determining how much work each of your players needs on his or her shooting. For instance, have your players each take a ball and line up at midfield. You stand at the 18 yard mark and have them one at a time pass the ball to you, come running at you as you pass the ball back either left or right, and have them shoot. This drill is very simple, but exposes weaknesses in many potential areas and will allow you to see close-up where your shooter needs practice.

If the defensive player succeeds in trapping the soccer ball, they switch places with the player who passed it. The offensive skills acquired by youth soccer players are 1) making crisp, accurate passes 2) receiving the ball cleanly and in control. The defensive soccer player will learn to 1) position themselves effectively 2) become efficient at trapping the ball.

By establishing effective ball control in soccer games, you’ll be able to consistently put yourself into a position to win. The opposing team can’t score while you are in possession and is bound to make a mistake in trying to gain control. That’s when you strike.

Score and Stop Challenge

This fun basketball drill for beginning players provides them with game-like play with an extra challenge.

Players will form teams of five and play full- or half-court sets. Teams are awarded points not for scoring, but for scoring and then successfully getting a stop on defense. Athletes are challenged to work on their transition game and not pause to celebrate once they score, but to instead turn around and immediately focus on defense.

The first team to a certain number of points, or the greater number of points in a certain time, wins.

Seven Chances

This basketball drill for kids also has teams of five playing full- or half-court sets. This time, the offensive unit will have seven chances to score against the defense. Once the offense has used their seven opportunities, they will switch to playing defense and the new offense will get seven chances to score.

For some extra motivation, the team with the most baskets at the end of the drill is the winner and the losing team has to run suicide drills. The dreaded suicide drill is a strong motivational tool to get players to work hard.

Dribble Tag

Dribble Tag is another beginning basketball drill that improves dribbling skills. This drill can use either the full or half court, depending on the size and ability level of your players and how many players are practicing. If you have some bigger and better players, it might be best to divide the court in half and make sure those players are split up to make the game more fair for everyone.

Once the boundaries have been determined, have each player start dribbling their own ball. Assign one player to be “it,” and, just like in the regular playground game, that player must attempt to touch someone else and make that person the new “it.” Athletes must use proper dribbling form at all times and focus on maintaining control of their balls while running from the player who is “it.”

5 Soccer Drills

To be competitive in today’s game it imperative you put away the old outdated training methods. Running long distances can be slowing you down and may be burning off the muscle you need for bursts of speed and power. Soccer players need strength and conditioning exercises that both closely resemble the actions of their body and muscles that perform during the game and mirror the energy systems that are used in a game!

Here are 5 soccer drills to help your power and speed.

1. The Box Drill – Use cones placed 6 yards apart in a square. Start at one cone and run forward to the next cone. Perform a drop step circle around that cone. Perform a shuffle step to the next cone. Perform a drop step circle around that cone. Backpedal to the next cone. Perform a drop step circle around that cone. Shuffle step to the original starting cone. Perform a drop step circle around that cone. Run diagonal to the next cone. Perform a drop step circle around that cone. Shuffle step to the next cone. Perform a drop step circle around that cone. Backpedal to the original starting cone.

2. One Leg Squats – One leg squats is another excellent leg strength exercise. Stand on a platform and lower one leg off until you are just below parallel and then stand back up using the other leg. Work up to 3 sets of 10 for each leg.

3. Uphill Sprints – Uphill sprints will help you develop power. NFL All-Time leading rusher Emmitt Smith was a big proponent of hill sprints. Beach runs in soft sand are also really good for developing acceleration. Make 10 yard sprints with plenty of rest in between.

4. Zig Zag Ball Handling Drill – In this drill you will set up cones in a zigzag pattern at about 5 yards apart. The closer together the cones, the more difficult the drill. Next you will line up at one cone and dribble the ball to the next cone and cut around the cone and on to the next, then you dribble the ball back to the beginning. Take a short rest and repeat.

5. Groin Conditioning – Metabolic conditioning (intervals) should always remain at the end of a training session that incorporates “explosiveness”. If you fatigue the athlete with conditioning, you can’t expect the athlete to perform explosively and you may even compromise safety. Like all other aspects of the program, in order to develop “groin-specific” adaptations, you must incorporate lateral movement into the conditioning drills.

This means short, high-intensity intervals that include lateral shuffling, crossovers, and sprints into and out of lateral movement. Intervals can range from 10 to 60 seconds (or more). Rest intervals will vary, but one option is to rest an equal amount of time to the work interval.

If you have several good shooters on your team, that’s certainly good news. The bad news, though, is that if their teammates can’t deliver the ball to them when they’re open, your number of scoring chances will plummet. The following drills work to sharpen those all-important passing skills and put some sizzle in your team’s “offensive” play.

Pressure passes

Players who can spot open teammates and deliver accurate passes, all while being pestered by aggressive defenders, make playing defense difficult for your opposition. The pressure passes drill helps your players stay cool under pressure and deliver accurate passes to teammates on the move.

What you need: Groups of three players. One ball for each group.

How it works: Break your team into groups of three, make two of them offensive players and one a defensive player, and move to one end of the court. One of the offensive players begins in the corner along the baseline and holds the ball. His offensive partner begins above the key (at the top of the free-throw circle), with the defensive player between him and the basket.

1. On your whistle, the player with the ball delivers a chest pass to his partner.

2. After he delivers the pass, he cuts to the basket. As soon as the other offensive player catches the ball, the defender begins guarding him closely, trying to deny another pass.

3. If he can, the offensive player passes the ball to his cutting partner for a lay-up. If a passing lane isn’t available, the ball handler begins dribbling to his left or right until he can create an opening to pass the ball.

4. Have the ball handler use pass fakes and attack the feet of the defender (step around him) until he can pass the ball to his partner. From the point where the cutting player catches the return pass, he dribbles in for a lay-up.

Coaching pointers: You can run this drill on both sides of the basket and at each end of the court, as long as you alternate between groups at one end. This makes for very little standing-around time, because 12 kids can easily be involved in this drill at one time. Encourage defenders to attack the ball handlers and remain on the balls of their feet so they can make quick reactions and disrupt what the players are attempting to do.
