The baseball bat is really a basic concept but a pretty complex object. Here are some baseball bats info to enlighten you about its exciting history and design. It is essential to get a grip on the bat’s most fundamental concepts just before you make a getting choice. So, with out further ado, here are some intriguing baseball bats info:

A baseball bat is essentially a smooth rod that the batter uses to hit the golf ball thrown by the pitcher, signaling the other gamers to run close to the bases and eventually try and score a homerun. The thickest component of the bat, the element that is supposed to hit the golf ball, is named the barrel as well as the best component of the barrel for hitting the ball is known as the sweet spot. The barrel finally gets thinner and thinner until it types into the take care of. On metal bats, rubber may perhaps wind close to the take care of for very good grip. The knob is at the incredibly opposite end in the barrel’s tip and helps a batter to hang onto the bat to ensure that it does not fly away! Think about this earlier than purchasing that low-cost bat that no 1 else appears to care for.

Within the early days of baseball, younger players were most prevalent along with the majority of bats were handmade, so sizes and shapes varied wildly. But as baseball became additional of an official, regulated sport, so did the baseball bats. In 1859, policies have been created about the diameter of your bat, and to this day just about every sort of league has their personal individual rules. For that reason, be positive you might be clear on your league’s guidelines on baseball bat measurements. Though all bats look extremely similar to each other, you’ll find minuscule differences that aren’t apparent towards the human eye. I hope these historic baseball bats details had been helpful!

Americas Nationwide Pastime reached its Zenith of glory by 1860s. Alexander Joy Cartwright modernized the sport in 1845 to virtually its existing kind. On the other hand, the specs to baseball bats kept transforming with each and every innovation and have to have. The improvements altered bat supplies to your present aluminum alloy through the classical picket.

Despite the fact that entire of baseball gear has undergone a complete makeover, nothing has adjusted as considerably and as swiftly as the bat. There are lots of diverse sorts of bats designed for Small Leagues, Senior Leagues, college, and pros. Each and every coalition has a congeal of parameters for keg diameter and loop dimensions. It may be unconditional overwhelming when you take into account the range of baseball bat brands, resources, styles, and qualities.

Bat Supplies

Essentially you will find three categories but adequate for new comers to acquire bowled more than.

Wooden: usually willow wood from Canada and Australia goes into creating bats for their fantastic grain and fibrous structure. Seasoned wood is employed to create bats which is usually evidenced by the lengthy fibers of wider nature. One greatest advantage of wood bats is customizability as regards to barrel and grip. Contrary to beliefs, heavier wood bats create better impacts than lighter bats by virtue of the momentum. But these aren’t crack free of charge plus the sweet spots get decreased after endured usage.

Aluminum alloys: Get ready to spend about $ 200 on these. These are stronger yet lighter and enable generate higher swing speeds. The common alloy applied here is 7046; but special alloys like CU31/7050 with higher zirconium, magnesium and copper content gives higher strength and durability. Ask for far more choices in this category. Construction depends upon the selling cost; so we have single/double layered bats in distinct alloys for increased impacts, rebounds etc. Additionally, cryogenically treated bats give lesser vibration and increased distance.

Graphite/Titanium lined: Beauty of this choice is the lightest weight bats. Thinner walled bats lined with titanium/graphite present desired power and assist lessen the impact shock of hitting the golf ball away through the sweet spot.

Requirements

USA Baseball, the governing body, issues charts for bat selection which benefits fresher. The bat is usually chosen either by age or by your height. The charts are available at just about every baseball club and more than the net.

For age among 5-7 years the bat size suggested is involving 24″-26″ which reaches 34 level for ages above 17 many years. The other chart begins for a height of 36-40 with 26 bat until 73+ having suggested a length of 34.

Bats are just component of the recreation and not the match within themselves. Bear in mind the saying, you can take the horse to the lake, but drinking water is his prerogative.

Fantasy Baseball 2009

Well, the season is just under one week away which means fantasy baseball season is fast approaching. Drafts have already started and leagues are starting to form. The popularity of fantasy baseball has absolutely exploded over the past couple of years. Everyone seems to be joining in on the fun. I recently saw a news story somewhere about how women were increasingly becoming part of the fantasy sports scene. I absolutely love fantasy baseball. It gives me a chance to prepare for the upcoming season and take a look at what happened last year statistically.

I have to admit that I have done more mock drafts than I can count so far this spring. I love putting together a baseball team and competing with other users on a fantasy baseball website. I primarily use Yahoo! to play fantasy baseball but I have been experimenting with ESPN as well as MLB.com. I find it incredibly entertaining to put together a fantasy team from scratch. So one thing I wanted to talk about was a suggestion on how to draft a team. I am in no way a fantasy baseball expert but I do have my own strategy that has worked for me in the past. First off, I want to start by saying that I believe Jose Reyes is the single most overrated player in fantasy baseball.

Yes he is a 5 category fantasy player but his average, power, and RBI potential are not worth a first round pick in my opinion. I realize that shortstop is a very scarce position but I am not willing to blow a first round pick on a shortstop other than Hanley Ramirez. I would much rather use my first round pick, especially early in the draft, on a power hitter that will hit for a ton of average, home runs, and RBIs. Albert Pujols is the single most consistent hitter in the major leagues and I would much rather take him than most other players. However, my absolute favorite spot in a fantasy draft in a 10 team league is the 6-8 spots and in a 12 team league I like the 8-10 picks. You can still get an incredible player at the top (especially since someone will probably waste a pick on Reyes and I have even seen Chase Utley go in the first round or very early second round) and you then you get an early second round pick right after that.

What I have found myself doing is being able to grab someone like Miguel Cabrera (who might win the AL MVP this year) and then turn around and grab someone like Lance Berkman or Carlos Lee and every once in awhile Mark Teixeira will drop down to the 14th or so pick and I can grab him also. There are plenty of players that can fill in for speed. The most important pick for me in the third round pick this year where I completely and totally zone in on Carlos Beltran. I think that he is underrated and he is ranked around 25th overall in fantasy baseball. The guy is a solid and consistent 5 category player. I sit back and watch people draft pitchers with some first and second round picks.

This is where some conflict comes up when I talk to people during mock drafts. For me, pitchers are so much more volatile than position players. People with the last first round pick and the first second round pick have consistently been picking Johan Santana and Tim Lincecum back to back. Now of course they are going to have the best one two punch of any rotation in the league, but for me health among pitchers is much more of a concern than position players. Plus, a top tier position player is going to play around 160 games when fully healthy and a starting pitcher is only going to make 30-35 starts in a season. I honestly wait until around round six or seven before I start drafting pitchers.

You can put together a very good staff late in drafts if you know what you are doing. I have been getting pitchers like Chad Billingsley, Javier Vazquez (who should be fantastic in the NL), and Yovani Gallardo after the 8th round. That is going to be three ERAs around 3.50, WHIPs around 1.20, wins around 15, and strikeouts around 200. That is a devastating 1-3 on starters. Oh, and I literally laugh hysterically when people blow their fourth or fifth round pick on Papelbon. Why do people slobber all over one category pitchers? Closer is the single most unpredictable and volatile position in fantasy baseball. We saw teams switching closers all the time last year and I was able to not draft a single closer in one of my leagues yet finished 7th out of 12 in saves last year. Granted 7th out of 12 is not that great but considering the number of saves I got off the waiver wire and free agency it just goes to show how quickly and how many closers can lose their jobs.

This year I have been taking Brian Wilson as well as Matt Lindstrom very late. Usually around round 18. My lineup is usually mostly filled out by the time I start drafting pitchers in the 8th or 9th rounds. Like I said before I absolutely love doing fantasy drafts and playing against family and friends or complete strangers. If any of you who read this would be interested in starting a league for fun or just talking about fantasy baseball in general feel free to head on over to the forums page and post your thoughts and/or if you are interested in starting a league and playing against each other and other members of this site. Fantasy baseball is one of those things that I feel like anyone who loves baseball will enjoy. It gives you a chance to analyze statistics of certain players, teams, ballparks, and any number of other factors.

For instance, Matt Holliday was one of the best players in the Major Leagues while he was in Colorado. Now he is in Oakland and it will be interesting to see what will happen to his numbers moving from hitter friendly Coors Field to the pitcher friendly stadium out in Oakland.

Baseball Drills – A Conversation With Myself

I haven’t exactly done the proper research to call this a FAQ, but they certainly are questions…that are asked..quite a bit..I think. Okay, it’s time to stop stumbling around an introductory sentence and get to the good stuff. Questions about baseball and baseball drills. This is a conversation I had with myself in my head, if it helps you follow along I asked the questions in my normal, Midwestern United States accent (I’m from Kansas) and answered them in a deep southern accent, a VERY bad southern southern accent.

Q: Is baseball our greatest American pastime?
A: Well, I reckon (sorry, I couldn’t resist) it probably should be. It is certainly our most timeless and precious pastime, but I would probably say that tailgating and NASCAR are our favorite pastimes.

Q: How can I become a better hitter?
A: Drills, Drills, Drills. There is only one way to become a better baseball player and that is to practice. It’s not enough just to practice though, you have to get make sure you get proper instruction and practice the right way. That way you don’t ever have to UNlearn anything.

Q: What are the best baseball drills to do to become a better hitter?
A: There are a ton of different baseball drills you can do to become a better hitter. The best drills are going to be the ones that provide a cure for your particular ailment. If you’re struggling with your step and your load, try soft toss to get the timing within your swing back, if you’re struggling keeping your head down and keeping your eye on the ball, try doing some tracking the ball drills to make sure you track the ball all the way into the catcher’s mitt, and if you want to improve bat speed, try the quick toss drill which is very similar to soft toss but the ball’s come in rapid succession.

Q: So this is all I have to do to become a better hitter?
A: Not exactly, there are a ton of different baseball drills that people use to make themselves a better hitter, and remember, there’s more to the game than just hitting.

Q: I have one more quick question, did you lose your southern accent halfway through our discussion. A: Well, I’ll be, it looks like I did fall out of character *sneeze* oh boy, looks like I’m getting a code. Anyways, get out there and study hitting, become a better student of the game and experiment with different drills and see which baseball drills work best for you. This is a great place to start it helped me a lot:

Tips to Become Good Baseball Players

What good baseball players need to learn? The answer is pitching. However, until a boy gets out of high school, he just need to develop two basic pitches-the curve and the fast ball. In the first place, he’ll get four pitches with the fast ball alone-low inside, low outside, high inside, high outside. If he then learns to change the speed of each pitch, he can double his assortment.

The overall grip is the same for the curve and fast ball; forefinger and middle finger spread in a comfortable V on top of the ball, thumb underneath. For the fast ball from the overhand or three-quarter delivery, the hand should be directly behind the ball. When the ball leaves the hand it should rotate upward, or toward the pitcher. To make this spin more effective, pitchers usually grip the ball across the stitches-some across the fat part of the figure 8 pattern, some at the narrow part.

To throw the curve, the pitcher makes the ball spin, or rotate, away from the hitter at an angle. He wants the ball to go out and down; not on a horizontal plane or “flat.” To accomplish this, run the top fingers along the stitches. Go slowly through the delivery as with the fast ball.

At the forward snap of the wrist, twist the hand outward and bear down on the outside finger. Beginners should first learn to twirl the ball at the proper angle. (It’s a good idea to paint a large black spot on one side of the ball to help get the correct angle to the spin.)

To improve a pitcher’s control, managers might consider erecting a set of “strings”. Here’s how it’s done: stretch a string between two poles, or trees at average shoulder height. Stretch out another one at knee height. Then tie two pieces of twine, 12″ apart, to the top string and loop both around the bottom string. The rectangle forms the strike zone. To complete the job, build a pitching mound in front of the strings at the proper distance.

The Windup

Let’s switch to the body movements now, using the three-quarter delivery as our example since it is the most popular. Two basic positions are employed-the full windup and the “stretch”. The full windup is used mostly when the bases are unoccupied. In professional ball, it is used when runners are on 3rd, on 2nd and 3rd or on 1st, 2nd and 3rd. Pitchers usually “stretch” with runners on 1st, or 1st and 2nd, and also 1st and 3rd.

Good baseball players at eight years old probably should first be taught to throw from the stretch position and then gradually be introduced to the full windup. Before starting any move, the pitcher must learn how and where to stand on the mound. The rules say he must have one foot in contact with the pitching rubber until the ball is delivered.

This means his pitching foot-the right foot for a right hander, the left for a southpaw-is to be an the plate at the start of windup and remain in contact until the body is in the final part of the delivery cycle. (The pitcher cannot step forward to the pitching plate and make that part of the windup.)

The toe of the pitching foot ought to extend over the forward edge of the rubber with the heel on top. The weight should be on the back foot, located comfortably behind the rubber. The pitching hand holds the ball out of the batter’s sight behind the pitching leg.

As soon as the pitcher gets his eyes on the target, with the catcher in proper receiving position, he can start his move.

Remember that faithful, regular practice is the best way to improve all aspects of your game. Good baseball players are made, not born!

The Beauty Of Spring Training Baseball

When I was a kid my dad used to take me and my brother to spring training games down in Florida for the weekend. This was always a weekend of sun, fun, catching multiple games a day and meeting a lot of young players who would go on to be superstars. I came to treasure these times not only because it was great family time, but because it would ignite a lifelong love of spring training. It not only meant that the sun was coming out again, but that it was a new beginning for everyone in baseball.

During the off-season you would always here about baseball players getting ready for the season. In the dark days of December you would read about their workout regimens, about how they would spend their mornings learning how to mix HCG, then going out to train at their indoor gym all afternoon long. What spring training meant is that everything was starting anew and that the training regime would now begin to pay off on the actual field. It was like the beginning of spring and a sign that things would begin changing.

My favorite thing to do at spring training was watch the pitchers. Unlike just about any other position in sports, pitching is about finding your rhythm. It’s about getting back that fastball that you last left on the mound four months ago. Spring training for a pitcher is about making sure your speed and control doesn’t slip. It’s about trying to perfect your art.

During spring training, outside of bullpen work managers don’t like to have their pitchers on the mound for too long. It is possible to wear your pitcher out if you push them too hard out of the gate. You watch managers bring their pitchers into spring training games for about 2 innings at a time and just when a pitcher is about to hit his stride you take him out. It’s all about coaxing a pitcher to slowly get to his full potential. Start them at 70% and slowly build them up so that when they are ready for opening day they are at a full 100%. This is why managers get paid so much and are much smarter than the average sports fan: they know about patience and they about finding the best way to get the most out of their playoffs. Its reasons like that why there is nothing quite like spring training baseball.

The Key to Heaven – Dreams and Baseball

Dreams can be conceptual, teaching us a specific lesson, or they can be prophetic, a promise of what is yet to come. I dreamed last night that one of my stepsons asked about coming to Christ. He inquired if simply being a good person could get one into Heaven? Of course, the answer is “No”.

Imagine you are the coach of a youth baseball team (an analogy my stepson would identify with.) At the beginning of the season you told the kids that if they each played well they would go to the ultimate tournament in a great location, a trip every player was hungry to take. No one wanted to miss such an unparalleled opportunity.

The deal was, each player had to make a real commitment to practice, to improve, and to stay focused on the coach.

At the end of the season the team paid for a slot at the tournament. Travel arrangements were made for the trip. As the roster of players was read, certain names were not included…some of them the best players. What?

My stepson asked me how that made sense. The team had earned the trip; why would a coach leave some really good players behind?

The answer was one of commitment. The ‘team’ had not earned the trip, but each player had worked to secure their seat on the flight to the tournament. The deal made at the start of the season was between each individual player and the coach. Personal growth was the basis of the offer made to earn this trip of a lifetime, not team success.

Sure, there were some gifted kids who demonstrated naturally superior skills for the elements of baseball. However, they had not accepted the offer made at the beginning of the season. They did not commit; they did not improve; they simply rested on their innate abilities and offered nothing more. They rejected the offer; therefore they were not invited to the tournament.

The tournament was the reward for commitment, work and responsibility. Those who stepped up received the reward. Those who looked good without commitment failed to live up to the agreement. They refused the offer; they did not gain the reward.

Natural ability is seldom an important ingredient when life lessons are learned. It is what we do with our natural gifts that matters most. The stories that teach and touch us the most are those where a person does amazing things through effort and endurance – far surpassing what their natural abilities would indicate was possible. What glory does the Lord receive by the demonstration of our natural abilities? None. He chose uneducated fishermen to be His disciples. Their ministry success could never be considered the result of their personal achievement. Their stories are meaningful because only God could be the author of them.

Should we reward a pretty girl for simply being pretty? Sure, it happens, but physical beauty fades. It is learning to overcome our shortcomings that builds character and self-esteem. Faith allows us to accept the offer made by Jesus Christ. We must come to Him – only by making the commitment and putting forth the effort will we gain the reward.

The narrow gate to heaven is never opened by natural ability. The combination is only discovered through faith and commitment.

So, how did the dream end? The fact that my stepson asked the question in the first place indicated that his ears were now open. He left our conversation and went to speak with his family, his wife and our grandchildren. They accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior, though someone else led that prayer.

It is often the case that someone other than the one who planted the seed or watered the crop brings in the harvest. It doesn’t matter how, it doesn’t matter whom. What matters is that when we enter the narrow gate to heaven our family will be complete.

Only time will tell if my dream was conceptual or prophetic. I pray it is the latter. Are you betting your life on just looking good? There is only one key that will unlock the narrow gate – Jesus Christ.

Elements of a Great Baseball Glove

So you’re shopping for a new baseball glove. You want something that will not just catch a ball but will feel like an extension of your own hand. That doesn’t come with just any glove, which is why you need to shop carefully and keep in mind the things that make a baseball glove great.

Material – Baseball gloves can be made of synthetic materials or of leather. Most players choose leather for its softness and durability, as well as its ability to conform individually to the player’s hand. Top-grain cowhide is the standard for most gloves. Full-grain leather is stiffer, which may make the glove last longer but also takes longer to break in than top-grain leather.

Webbing – The type of webbing you choose can depend upon the position you are playing. Webbing that has space between each strip of leather is ideal for outfielders and third basemen, because it has more “give” and can trap a ball easily. Middle infielders use closed webbing, a solid pocket, to quickly grab a ball from the pocket. Pitchers also prefer closed webbing to hide their pitches before they’re thrown. There is also a trap-style or “six-finger” web that allows flexibility and versatility. Other open styles are the H-web and I-web.

Lacing – Make sure the lacing on your glove is nice and tight. If you can wiggle the finger stalls a lot while wearing the glove for the first time, the lacing is probably too loose. Remember that the lacing will loosen as the glove is broken in, so you don’t want too loose a fit from the start.

Size – Keep in mind the position you will be playing when determining the size of your baseball glove. You wouldn’t want an open-web, five-finger glove if you’re a catcher; neither would you want to use a catcher’s mitt in the outfield. Middle infielders need a short glove, while outfielders use a longer glove. First basemen use a mitt that is similar but not identical to a catcher’s mitt. Whatever glove you choose, make sure it is appropriate to the position you will play most often.

Fit – Lastly, if the glove isn’t comfortable the first time you wear it, don’t expect it to miraculously conform to your hand as it is broken in. A certain level of stiffness is expected, but if the glove just feels wrong on your hand, give it up and try another glove. The glove should fit snugly yet comfortably, and have an adjustable wrist strap to allow for a personalized fit.

College Baseball Recruiting Rankings

Let all the debates begin. Each and every year fans disagree on the best college baseball recruiting rankings and who actually had the best recruiting class. Each fan usually favors their own team to some degree, but even unbiased fans have trouble agreeing on who’s recruiting class was actually the best. Even the experts usually can’t agree.

The college baseball recruiting rankings will vary somewhat each and every year, but you will typically see these power house teams near the top:

1. Arizona State

2. Oregon

3. Cal State Fullerton

4. Rice

5. USC

6. LSU

7. Georgia

8. Arizona

9. UNC

10. Stanford

These power house schools (along with a few others) get the best players coming out of high school each and every year. That’s why they continue to have winning programs year in and year out. These schools are signing the best of the best or elite level players who have the right athleticism, talent and skills to play at the top levels of college baseball.

Let’s be honest, coaching is vital to having a great program, but you must have great talent to win consistently. Good coaches are also good recruiters and the success they have tends to bring in more and more great talent. That’s why the list of teams at the top of the college baseball recruiting rankings may move around each year, but the same teams normally make the list.

Are you (or someone you know) trying to make it to the next level of baseball and become a part of someone’s recruiting class next year or in the years to come? If you are, you need to put yourself in a position to be recruited. For elite level players, recruitment will happen automatically. For everyone else, you need to gain an advantage by marketing and promoting yourself to coaches.

Remember, college baseball is played at all division levels. Coaches need quality players from the junior college level all the way up to the elite Division I schools listed above. If you have the baseball talent and skills to play at their level of play, coaches will love to hear from you! Develop your own plan for making direct contact with coaches.

The college baseball recruiting rankings are fun to look at and second guess each year. However, if you are looking to be part of a future recruiting class, begin making contact with coaches no later than your junior season in high school. The opportunities are out there and waiting for you!
