NBA Tickets – Reflecting on Drafts of the Past: 2006 (Picks 21-25)

StubHub.com is the best place to get NBA tickets.

When it comes to the NBA draft, there are no guarantees. Even after all the research done on NBA prospects, there are always busts and always surprises. Here I examine picks 21 through 25 in the 2006 draft and how each player has come along in their NBA career thus far.

21.Boston Celtics selected Rajon Rondo: We all know how this one worked out. Rondo was an integral part of the Celtics team that won the NBA championship this season. The big knock on Rondo was that he couldn’t shoot and it caused him to slip to the Celtics here at 21. Rondo still isn’t a good shooter, but he does everything else so well that it doesn’t really matter. He’s a top-tier on-ball defender and a pure passer. His playmaking ability helps the Big Three sell NBA tickets in Boston.

22.New Jersey Nets selected Marcus Williams: Williams experienced the biggest slide on draft day of any prospect in ’06. His stock was hurt by his lack of conditioning and the infamous laptop incident at UCONN. Not much has changed, except he stopped stealing electronics. He’s struggled to stay in shape and saw very little time in two seasons with the Nets. He was shipped to Golden State this summer, where he’ll have a chance to earn significant minutes on a team that needs help at the point.

23.New Jersey Nets selected Josh Boone: I’ll admit that I thought Boone was going to be a huge bust in the NBA and for a year it looked as if I might have been right. Boone struggled to get minutes during his rookie campaign, averaging just 11 minutes per game. But he had a solid sophomore season, tallying eight points and seven boards per game in 25 minutes a night.

24.Memphis Grizzlies selected Kyle Lowry: Lowry is a hidden treasure. He doesn’t get much exposure playing in Memphis, but this kid is showing some real signs. I believe that he’s going to be better than the Grizzlies’ prized point guard Mike Conley. Lowry is a tenacious defender and is lightning quick. He’s developing a jumper and once he does, he’ll be tough to stop. He’s been the subject of trade rumors, but nothing substantial has come out of them thus far. He’ll be a starter somewhere in two or three years.

25.Cleveland Cavaliers selected Shannon Brown: Brown has struggled to make the transition to the pro game. He’s a tweener, so it’s not a huge surprise that he hasn’t found his niche in the league. He’s currently on the Bobcats’ roster, but looks like a long shot to stick in the NBA. He should get his passport ready.
