The Top 5 Players in the NBA

5. Dwyane Wade – What a way to follow a major letdown of a 2007-2008 season. Wade bounced back as hard as anyone, leading the league in scoring (30.2), to go with 7.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds, and 2.2 steals per game. His turnovers were a bit high, but no one’s complaining. Wade definitely won his team far more games than they would have won without him.

4. Dwight Howard – The big man led his team to the NBA finals last season and seems to be on the way up. His turnovers are on the way down, his free throw situation is (slowly) improving, and he’s a rebounding and blocked shot machine. Howard led the NBA in rebounds (13.8) and blocks (2.9), shooting an amazing 57.8% from the field. What’s not to like?

3. Chris Paul – Arguably on his way to becoming one of the best NBA point guards of all-time, CP3 seems to get better with each year. Leading the NBA in both assists (11.0) and steals (2.6) is no laughing matter. At just 24 years old, it’s scary to think about where he’ll be at his peak.

2. Kobe Bryant – Some may criticize me for putting Kobe at #2, and not #1. After all, he led his team to an NBA championship this past season. But hear me out. He’s still an incredible player, make no mistake about it – but his numbers have slowly begun to decline. At 30 years old, this is to be expected. As for the NBA title, his supporting cast (Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom) was more than LeBron had on his side. Give LeBron Pau and Lamar, and he’ll bring home a ring too.

1. LeBron James – The new and future king of the NBA. Sure, he hasn’t won a championship and some may be critical of his spotty clutch factor, but you can’t argue the numbers and what he did for his team last season.

28.4 ppg, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.3 assists. 1.7 steals, and 1.2 blocks. 49% from the field. A 66-16 record. It all adds up to the league’s most valuable player.

Nfl Tickets – Nfc Contenders

Here are the teams that I could see potentially representing the NFC in the Super Bowl as of Nov. 10 of the 2010 NFL season:

New York Giants: For my money, the Giants are the best team in the NFC. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I love balanced football teams. The Giants have found a good balance on the ground with their one-two running back punch of Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. Jacobs got off to a slow start this season, but has found his niche spelling the surprisingly effective Bradshaw. This solid running game sets up what it becoming one of the more dangerous passing attacks in the league. Eli Manning had some turnover problems early in the season, but seems to have rectified them.

Hakeem Nicks is having a fantastic sophomore season and has established himself as one of the best wide receivers in the league. Steve Smith complements Nicks extremely well, as Smith plays the possession role to Nicks’ big play and red zone threat. Nicks has a knack for finding the end zone and is definitely a player to get NFL tickets to see on the field.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Giants took a little while to hit their stride, but they’re now getting after the quarterback in a way that brings back memories of their recent Super Bowl defensive front. This unit seems to be getting better every week and is the icing on the cake that puts the team ahead of the pack in the conference.

New Orleans Saints: The defending champs stumbled out of the gate and just didn’t look like their dominant selves in the early going. However, it seems as though they’ve righted the ship in recent weeks with a convincing win over the Steelers and blowouts of the Bucs and Panthers. The team should get Reggie Bush back after the bye; his presence has really been missed on offense. If the defense can continue to play like it has over the last three weeks, then the Saints will again be contenders for a Super Bowl berth.

Philadelphia Eagles: Michael Vick makes the Eagles a different team on offense. He’s back to being the dynamic playmaker he was before he went to prison, only now he’s a more accomplished and patient pocket passer. He completely changes how opposing defenses have to approach this offense and has won all of the games in which he’s started and finished the contest. With a solid duo of wideouts in DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, as well as a young stud running back in LeSean McCoy, Vick has all the weapons he needs. Defensively, the team is solid, but not without its holes.

Green Bay Packers: The Packers have had a tough time with injuries, but have kept their heads above water regardless. Their passing offense is very good, but it’s their defense that could get them to the Super Bowl. That unit has really been coming into its own in recent weeks.

Atlanta Falcons: I’m not quite ready to buy into the Falcons, but they’re a good team. They’ve got to learn to win on the road, though, or they’ll be settling for a Wild Card berth come playoff time.

NBA – King James Claims the MVP

Surprise, surprise – Monday at 4 p.m., LeBron “King” James of the Cleveland Cavs was named the NBA’s most valuable player. The season had been awash with whispers and speculations; some pointed at James, while others considered superstar Kobe Bryant of the Lakers and Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat for the award.

All three made viable claims to the title. Bryant, the Lakers’ 11-time superstar, was awarded MVP for the first time last year and may have been aiming at two consecutive awards. The three were costars in the summer’s gold-winning Olympic basketball team, and they seemed set on outperforming each other nightly during the regular season. But by the end of the season, Wade found himself out of the running; although his stats were competitive, Miami’s poor record dropped his chances.

While Bryant may be a phenomenal player, this year has belonged to the King. For James, preparation for this season began last year, after the Cavaliers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Goaded by his team’s game 7th loss in Boston – despite personally scoring 45 points – James approached his training with new vigor. He spent hours in the Cavs’ training facility lifting weights, honing his jump shot, and practicing finishing at the rim with his left hand. Once he involved himself in the Olympic Games, he sharpened his defensive abilities, guarding some of his opposition’s strongest players.

In the regular season, James proved himself an outstanding player. He started 81 games this season – a career high – and bested his own personal records in free-throws and field goals.

According to ESPN’s John Hollinger, James’ efficiency was not only the best in his career but the best in the league. He became the second player to claim five consecutive seasons with a minimum of 27 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists.

Beyond his personal victories, James led the Cavs to a great season – at 66-16 and 39-2 at home, the Cavs finished the season at the top overall seed.

Not only has James had an incredible personal year, but his stats also beat out Bryant’s. James averaged 28.4 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in the regular season; Bryant averaged 28.2 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.3 assists. James also outplayed Bryant defensively, according to the statistics. James averaged 1.7 steals per game and 1.1 blocks; Bryant is at 1.5 and .4, respectively.

At 24, James is among the youngest players to earn the MVP. The youngest was Wes Ensfeld at 23 during the 1968-69 season.

James accepted the award yesterday at 4 p.m. at his alma-mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary’s High School. The choice is hardly a surprise. It was at St. Vincent-St. Mary that the King exploded into the country’s view; it was where he won three state basketball championships, where he announced his plans to skip college in favor of professional basketball, and where he recently involved himself in a “60 Minutes” interview.

James is not the only Cavs member to win an award this year. His coach, Mike Brown, was awarded coach of the year last month. This is only the fourth time in NBA history that a team has claimed top seed, coach of the year, and MVP in one season.

Coaching Youth Football

Coaching youth football allows you to teach young football players the fundamentals of the game and bring individual talent together to play as a cohesive unit. That said, success on the gridiron begins on the practice field. Learning and implementing proper youth football skills & drills during practice will have you, your coaches, and players ready for the big game. There are no shortcuts when coaching youth football. Hard work, discipline, determination, in addition to coaching football fundamentals is what produces winning football teams and successful youth football players.

Below are some of the skills needed to become a good football coach, and you can find the football drills needed to run a practice properly in books or online from others football coaches at free websites like

Youth Football Coaching Skills

Be A Good Role Model – youth football players are an observant bunch. They imitate their role models whether on or off the field. It is the football coach’s responsibility to display the character that they want to see in their players. Character traits such as consistency, emotional control, honesty, and integrity are important.

Teach Football Fundamentals – practice to the players strengths and determine where they are weak. Pay particular attention to teaching football skills such as stance and footwork when players are performing youth football drills. Be sure you’re your players are focusing on all aspects of the drill and do not become sloppy in any area.

Use Creative Football Plays In Practice – like most children, youth football players need variety in their practices. Vary the practice schedule from day to day to keep them interested and continually learning. Keep the football drills short enough that players don’t lose interest and concentration.

Use Constructive Feedback – too many youth coaches “channel” football coaches they see in the movies. They believe that coaching football drills involves acting like a drill sergeant. While this attitude can have its place in the coach’s arsenal, it should not be the sole motivator. Teach them. Explain the who, what, where, why, and how of the football drill. You’ll end up with more intelligent youth football players.

Be Positive – youth football coaches must look to the positive aspects of the situation. Negative emotions bring negative results. The kids are going to be making mistakes throughout their lives. It’s important for a youth football coach to teach them how to overcome mistakes and even to capitalize on them. A successful and well coached football team masters the fundamentals, handles adversity, and brings home the championship due to the team’s attitude. Positive expectations will most likely bring positive results.
